Last week we studied Michael Rosenbaum’s “five shot” method. The five shots are closeup of the hands, closeup of the face, wideshot, over the shoulder and unusual/alternative. These shots together help a videographer to tell a story, painting a complete picture with moving images. Do you see them all in our video?

8th Grade Families: Hard to believe it’s that time already that time, but high school applications are beginning to appear. Please remember to submit all forms to Halley. She will give them to teachers to fill out their portions and keep them organized. Please submit all paperwork 2 weeks before you need it.
As Adam helpfully posted below, the students have been learning about the energy cycle in ecosystems and the Earth in general. We started off by reading a NASA article about albedo, which is the ratio of reflected solar energy to the total incident solar energy. The students then came up with their own experiments that tested reflectivity. We had some very creative experiments and some very interesting results. Apparently, darker paper does light faster than white paper under a magnifying glass. Who knew?
The next experiment we’ll be working on continues the energy theme and tests the effects of the urban heat island. Students are working on developing their questions right now (with guidance), and will be starting to test them in the next two weeks. These experiments are shaping up to be just as interesting as the albedo experiments!
In science, today at Seabury Middle School, students are learning about Albedo. They developed their own experiments to test the diffuse reflectivity of different objects.
Bienvenidos ! Welcome to Andres Alcain, an exchange student from Guatemala! Andres is staying with Sky’s family until December. He gave a wonderful presentation about Guatemala today and he’s a joy to have around. Be sure to say hello to him!

Clear your students’ calendars for this impactful learning opportunity. After attending the public Foss Waterway Workshops and having a chance to voice their ideas of what they wished to waterfront to look like, the students have been most excited about the ideas behind the organization Walk the Waterfront. http://walkthewaterfront.org/
“Tacoma has 7 miles of sea level shoreline between the Dome-Museum-UWT-Convention Center district and Point Defiance Park and Zoo. Much of this waterfront has public access … but it is not continuous. There are missing links along our waterfront. Extending Ruston Way’s Urban Conservancy S-6 shoreline zoning will help fill the gap between Thea Foss boardwalks and Ruston Way’s sidewalks. To improve livability, provide mobility and sustainable transportation solutions, increase opportunities for healthy recreation and celebrate the natural resource of our Commencement Bay shoreline, the Thea Foss and Ruston Way walkways need to be connected. Give us ADA accessible, family-friendly walkways and safe, wheel-friendly bike lanes.”
The students have already submitted letters to Mayor Strickland and members of the City Council in support of this plan. The president of Walk the Waterfront, Lara Hermann, contacted me and they are thrilled at our students’ initiative. They have invited them to speak on this cause at next month’s city council meeting. The students are doing research and collecting the data about the money, work and time (60 years) that has already been invested in cleaning up Thea Foss and Asarco superfund sites. Students will collect examples of other cities which have successfully transformed their waterfronts from industrial to people-friendly. They will then write essays and design presentations for City Council’s November 8th Citizen’s Forum.
This project integrates; language arts, research, writng, public speaking, problem solving, technology, government and most importantly, empowers them to have a voice in their community.
That day we’ll order some dinner here and head over before 5:00. The public forum is at 5:45. Once they release the agenda we’ll have a better idea of when they will be finished. Look for details as we get closer to the event.
