English: We have been working on a series of activities that will culminate in the writing of an essay, “This I Believe.” Over the past two weeks, we have listened to essays from the program, This I Believe, which was initiated in the early 1950’s. First Lego League: This past Monday, our Lego League leaders, Dan and Chad, came and introduced us to the First Lego League. The students spent the time building simple machines out of legos: conveyor belts, cranes, pulleys, pinchers… Being able to build these individual parts will come in very handy as students move toward building their own working robots.

For the foreseeable future, Dan and Chad will be working with us on FLL on Monday afternoons.

Take-apart Center: …is up and running. Students have been exploring the guts of laptops, overhead projectors, printers, and more.

Math: We had our second Continental Math League competition this week. The results were very impressive! Look for those to come home in the Friday Folder.

In our regular math work, topics have ranged from data manipulation (outliers, mean, median, mode, range, etc) to solving one and two-step algebraic equations, to dividing positive and negative fractions, to positive and negative exponents. Making good progress!

Performing Arts: Students have been experimenting with different kinds of warm-up activities. This week they also started working on accents, expression and some Shakespeare.

French: Students have been working on songs and interrogative verbs.
